How to Compare Bathroom Contractor Estimates

The lowest total is not necessarily the lowest comparable price. Normalize every estimate around the same scope, quantities, material allowances, permit responsibility, schedule, and warranty before choosing.

Planning guidance for professionally completed US projects. Local quotes, site conditions, material selections, permits, and access determine the actual price and schedule.

Build a comparison sheet

List every important scope item in rows and place each contractor in a column. Mark included, excluded, allowance, or unclear rather than comparing only bottom-line totals.

Questions behind the number

Ask who performs the work, who holds required licenses, how changes are priced, what happens after concealed damage is found, and who coordinates inspections and material defects.

Payment and documentation

Tie payments to clear milestones rather than dates alone. Keep the signed scope, drawings, allowances, change orders, insurance documentation, permits, inspection results, lien releases where applicable, and warranty terms.

RenoCostData decision brief: compare the actual scope

Normalize inclusions before ranking totals. An exclusion is not a saving, and an allowance may not buy the selected product.

Worked comparison—not a market quote

A is $24,000 excluding $2,000 of fixtures; B is $25,500 including equivalent fixtures. A is $26,000 on that scope. If A instead included a $1,000 fixture allowance, replace it with $2,000: add $1,000, not $2,000.

Your next step

Flag unknown rows for written clarification in the comparison tool. Assess payment, licensing and warranty separately from arithmetic.

Keep supporting documents with the estimate comparison and budget worksheet. This editorial analysis is not an inspection or professional certification.
